Essay

The object of the research – the Literary Heritage of Gregory of Nazianzus, namely the tragedy “Suffering Christ”. The dissertation purpose consists in attempt of definition of a place and meaning of the Literary Heritage of Gregory of Nazianzus in a historical-cultural context of the early Byzantine society of second half of IV century on the basis of complex historical-philological, culturological and theological analysis of the tragedy “Suffering Christ”. Methods: historical-genetic, historical-comparative, historical-tupological, historical-chronological. Scientific novelty: it is noted in the work that Gregory of Nazianzus’s literary and public activities were aimed at strengthening of the church institutions and Orthodox doctrine as well as at the fastest Christianization process in the empire; the classification of Gregory of Nazianzus’s literary poetic heritage has been specified in the thesis for the first time; a new dawn for determination of the time of writing of that Christian cento is a hypothesis for its phase-by-phase creation: the first version – in 60’s (after 17 June 362) and the final revision of the tragedy – in 80’s of IV century; in the course of the thesis research the purposes pursued by the author at creation of this writing were represented and concretized for the first time: historical-culturological, polemic and didactic one; it is the first time that the carried out analysis of the ancient reminiscences usage pattern gave a possibility to fix quite persistent semantic pattern of the tragedy; the first experience of the theology analysis of the Christian drama demonstrated that Christology, Triadology and Mariology of the tragedy stay in seamless unity with the whole literary heritage of Gregory of Nazianzus. Practical value of research: the results of research can be used at creation of general and special courses on a history of Byzantium, preparation of generalizing and special works, textbooks, directories, sites of the late antique and early Byzantine history, in scientific, educational and Internet-editions on a history of a christianity, and also at a spelling of articles, monographies and collective researches, devoted to study of a history of formation and development of christian outlook and culture in the Byzantian empire.
