Topical scientific task to substantiation the directions of using coal of Starobel'sk coal area on the basis of a complex estimation of coal composition and quality is answered in the dissertation. The representative database is created for maintenance of all-round complex studying and system generalisation of indicators of coal composition and quality and increase of definition reliability level of using directions. The typical quantitatively-petrographic composition of coal beds of productive formation of Starobel'sk coal area is defined. Genetic features of petrographic composition of coal are revealed and differences of coal of the area in comparison with one-age coal of Old Donbass are established. According to all existing classifications of both domestic and foreign coal beds h8, k2н, l7, m3 are the small almost the same stage of coalification and refers to the hard coal mark D. The energy and produce synthetic liquid fuels through hydrogenation identified as the main directions of coal using. Most suitable for burning is coal bed m3 and partly bed k2н. Coal of all beds on values of separate indicators belongs to different groups on suitability degree for hydrogenation and as a whole is suitable for it.
