The object of study: the process of socio-economic development of the region in modern conditions. The aim of study: the generalization of theoretical positions, the development of conceptual frameworks, methodological approaches and practical recommendations for directions of development and assessment of potential of the region. Methods of study: systematic and analytical method; systematic approach; morphological analysis; statistical analysis; method of integrated assessment; tabular and graphical methods; mapping method. The practical significance of results lays in fact that the obtained scientific results will help to improve the efficiency of usage of the region's potential in the modern conditions. Scientific novelty of results lies in fact that it was the first time when the conceptual frameworks for directions of development and assessment of potential of the region were developed. Were implemented: the components of potential of the region based on generalization of conceptual apparatus; scientific and methodological approach to assessment of usage of potential of the region; the formation of competitive potential of the region from the position of four key steps distinguishing: preparatory step, analytical step, operational step and application development step. Further developments have got: methodical approach to formation of potential of the region through the use of synthesis of systematic, structural and marketing approaches; classification attributes of systematization of reasons of inefficient usage of potential.
