The object of research is the process of strategic management of sustainable development of cities. The objective is to deepen the theoretical and methodological foundations and develop practical recommendations for improving the strategic management of sustainable development of cities. Methods: Analysis and synthesis, logic generalization and comparison, typological grouping, economic and statistical methods, strategic analysis, program-target method. Results: improved conceptual terminology, including subjects in the category of "strategic management of sustainable development of city", methodology of evaluation of the strategic management of sustainable development of cities, approach to selection of a set (the set of main and auxiliary strategies), approach to development partnership between local government, business, society and science in the process of strategic management of sustainable development of cities.Received further development: typology of cities and typology of strategies, approaches to determine competitive advantages for different types of cities and approach to the choice of the principles on which it is expedient to develop and implement strategies for strategies of sustainable development of cities, the process of strategic management of sustainable development of cities, in particular by specifying the stages of strategic management of sustainable development of cities, tools for improve strategic management of sustainable development of cities.
