Essay

In order to identify the relations between the texts, the research paper considers more than 2.500 Ukrainian folktales published in folklore anthologies between the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The author reveals and analyses the usage of proverbs as well as other paremic and non-paremic texts and text fragments incorporated into the tales. This allows to define and to substantiate the notions of "folklore intertext" and "folklore intertextuality". The amalgam of paremia and tale produces a new context for the paremias integrated into folktales; it assigns them specific lexical, structural and poetic properties and confers new functions which comply with the wholesome tendency of a tale and exert an impact on its reception. All this positions the folktale paremias as folklore intertexts.
