Stryamets N. Non-wood forest products in Ukrainian Roztochya: classification, use and prognosses of productivity

Object of study was wild fruits, medical herbs, mushrooms and other categories of NWFPs. The aim of the study was to assess the condition and use of non-timber forest resources in Roztochya (Ukraine) and Berislogan and Smoland (Sweden), classified by categories of FAO, to develop recommendations for sustainable use of NWFPs. Methods that were used in this dissertation were forestry and forest inventory methods, evaluation methods and mathematical statistics. Scientific novelty of the study is shown. The role and importance of NWFPs use in the context of sustainable forest management was done for the first time. It was made a comparative analysis of the use and protection of NWFPs in market and transition economies in Ukrainian Roztochya and Berislogan and Smoland (Sweden) respectively, set different motivations and historical aspects of use of NWFPs volume , species composition of forest fruits, medicinal plants and mushrooms were studied. The dissertation has practical significance of the presented results. Forest management organizations could use the presented results for forestry and organizations for the planning of NWFPs yields . Patented automatic way to determine the annual growth of trees by their cross sections is useful in dendrochronology to study climate change and its impact on the growth of plants and during the forecasting of NWFPs yields. Area of application is forestry.
