Essay

This research focuses on psycholinguistic and discourse strategic characteristics of verbal markers of emotional tension of the speaker in contemporary political English discourse of television interview. Psycholinguistic features of English politician discourse in a state of emotional tension involve different types of strategies including cognitive, metacognitive and cognitive-communicative and various tactics that implement these strategies. Cognitive strategies are marked in an interview by cause and consequence discursive connectors of local coherence and by tactics that input reflexive or cognitive information. These strategies implement such properties of discourse as interdiscursiveness, cohesion and informative category. Tactics of cognitive strategies are switching tactics (manipulation of content network) and reflexive information manipulation tactics (combination of different types of information). Metacognitive strategies whose function is discourse planning are represented by strategies of adaptation to emotional stress and strategies of overcoming it. The first act as co-units, marked by discursive alteration on the syntagmatic level, others are auxiliary units tagged by discursive markers of global coherence. Discourse alterations constitute a separate group of markers of metacognitive strategies to adapt to emotionally stressful situations. Cognitive-communicative strategies comprise head-on tactics signaled in an interview by lingual markers and distance strategies that incorporate symmetric tactics of compensation due to an interruption and suggestive equivocation strategies implemented by generalization, distortion and deletion of information tactics. Among the markers of cognitive-communicative strategies simple interruption prevails to which a politician in a state of emotional tension responds by hesitation pauses, repetitions, introduction of discursive and pragmatic markers and semantically diffuse lexical items. Keywords: political discourse, state of emotional stress, discourse marker, metacognitive strategies, cognitive-communicative strategies, cognitive strategies, tactics.
