Essay

This work reveals the result of complex analysis of paleogeographical, paleogeomorphological, paleotectonical, mineralogical, petrographical and geochemical data. Information on composition, structure and facial differentiation features of the kaolin weathering crust of North-Western part of Ukrainian Shield is refined. The relation between weathering crust and tectonic movements of Ukrainian Shield is analyzed. The system of paleoflexures, where kaolin weathering crust has increased thickness, is plotted. Comparative analysis of the Glukhivtsi-Turbiv and Dubriv-Khmeliv regions, which are the main kaolin regions of the North-Western Ukrainian Shield, is performed. Kaolins in both regions were formed under similar conditions, but maximum kaolin thickness is recorded inside the Glukhivtsi-Turbiv region. In the Dubriv-Khmeliv region, low thickness of kaolin is determined and increased amounts of silica, alkali and iron oxide are observed. The latter occurred due to introduction of material from the higher levels of peneplain. The relation between granite composition and the quality of resulting kaolins is evaluated. The model of kaolin distribution by the quality criteria (amount of Fe2O3, TiO2) on the example of Glukhivtsi deposit is built.
