Essay

The work is the first comprehensive study of the ecology of bloodsucking mosquito populations in Kyiv. The 34 species and subspecies of mosquitoes from 6 genera were registered. The most numerous are 2 species - Anopheles maculipennis and An. messeae; numerous - 5 species - Aedes cantans, Ochlerotatus sticticus, Ae. v. vexans, Ae. c. cinereus and Culex pipiens; common - 8, rare - 11, extremely rare - 8 species. The list of species was enlarged by 9 species and decreased by 4 species during the past three decades as a result of anthropogenic succession. Appearance of 2 new species and increase in number of 8 halophilous mosquito species was reported for the first time. The specie complexes of mosquitoes are represented mostly by adventive species which have been inhabiting the city territory for a long time and also act as an organic component of urban cenosis. The Holarctic and Palaearctic natives are dominating. The natives that may be considered stenotopic are Coquillettidia richiardii and Ae. geniculatus.
