Essay

The study consistently examined the changes in the international and legal status of prisoners of war from the end of the XIX century to the end of the World War I. There were found out the reasons for the losses of the Russian army in the form of the prisoners of war during the war. Special attention is paid to the coverage of camp life, the conditions and characteristics of employment of prisoners, the specifics of their adaptation to life in captivity. For the first time the intimate aspect of life in captivity is analyzed. The formation and development of the basic forms and methods of assisting Russian prisoners of war by state and non-governmental charitable organizations during the war are traced.
