Botvinko-Botiuk O. Structural-Semantic and Communicative-Pragmatic Peculiarities of Utterances of Contempt (A Study of English Literary Discourse)

The dissertation focuses on the conceptual basis of utterances of contempt, their fundamental syntactic and stylistic features. Lexical means of nomination and expression of the emotional state of contempt in Modern English have been analyzed. Communicative and pragmatic peculiarities of utterances of contempt in the English literary discourse have been revealed and the place of speech acts of contempt in the classifications of speech acts has been determined. Speech acts of contempt are realized in the conflict discourse and are characterized by violation of the main principles of politeness. Basic sociolingual factors that influence the functioning of speech acts of contempt have been analyzed. Nonverbal means expressing the emotional state of contempt have been revealed.
