Essay

The author analyses the paradigmatic relationships between euphemisms, dysphemisms known as hyponymy, synonymy and antonymy. The synonymous paradigms of euphemisms have the function of substitution and expressiveness, the synonymous paradigms of dysphemisms have the function of specification and expressiveness. The synonymous and antonymous rows of euphemisms and dysphemisms can be connected with litotes. These paradigms have core / non-core structure. The lingual synonyms belong to the core of a frame, the contextual ones to its periphery. The examination of euphemisms shows that the more synonyms represent a concept the stronger it is tabooed. They also participate in the conceptualization process.
