The thesis is the first complex research in the Ukrainian historiography devoted to socio-political, scientific and journalistic activities of a famous Polish patriot, socialist, politician, scientist, publicist and public figure Leon Wasilewski (1870-1936). The thesis revealed the main stages of Leon Wasilewski biography and outlook; defined his role and place in the restoration of independence of Poland; highlighted the activities of Leon Wasilewski as Minister of Foreign Affairs of the first government of the Second Polish Republic, when Treaty of Riga (1921) was signed. The revealing of unknown pages of Leon Wasilewski biography allowed us to determine his role in the attempts to improve Polish-Ukrainian dialogue during the interwar period. The thesis proved that life of Wasilewski was related to the struggle for the independence of Poland. He remained Pilsudski's close ally from the First World War to Coup d'etat of May 1926. He was one of the adherent of the idea of Federation of Ukrainian, Lithuanians and Belarusians. Wasilewski rightly deserves to be named one of the founders of an independent Polish state, because he participated in almost all the events that caused its revival.
