Essay

There is examined the official policy of the tsarist government in education and science within 30 years of the XIX - early XX century. The author analyzed the influence of social transformation of political views in the 60-70 years of the XIX century on the development of Classical Studies at The Saint Vladimir University. He followed the interrelation of the main Western directions of theoretical and methodological and philosophical views with the researches of scientists in Kyiv. The author considered the value, role and place of Classical Studies in the studying process on the History and Philology Faculty at The Saint Vladimir University. The complex of Classical Studies disciplines, which was taught on three departments (Greek literature and antiquities, Roman literature and antiquities and World history and statistics) can be divided into several areas: 1) the study of ancient history as a part of the world history; 2) the mastery of classical languages; 3) the commentation of ancient authors; 4) the study of a several subsidiary and related disciplines, which dealt with some problems of ancient civilization (antiquities, archeology, mythology, history and literature, etc.). This thesis proves that the Charter 1884, due to excessive strengthening of the role of classical philology in the educational process, caused irreparable damage to historical and philological education in general and Classical Studies in particular. The author analyzed the scientific achievements of The Saint Vladimir University researchers, described the main directions of their research, their historical essence of views and vision problems ancient history. According to archive documents and published sources, the author clarified some events of scientists' biographies and their service activities. This dissertation proves that researches of the Kyiv classical studies scientists matched the trends of world science and conducted in accordance with the prevailing western philosophical theories. The author of this thesis proved the thesis, according to which, most of Classical Studies scientists at The Saint Vladimir University made theirs researches in context of cultural and historical direction, whereas in the scale of Russian
