Essay

Origin of light scattering centers in NaI and CsI crystals has been studied by optical and electron microscopy technique. It has been shown that main type of defects in striation bands are new phase inclusions in form of hollow bars. Bars are gaseous channels with average diameter of 50 nm the internal surface of which covered by polycrystalline film. On a base of the fact that solubility of new phase is less then matrix significantly, it has been supposed that new phase originated from carbonates of sodium and thallium. It has been concluded that formation process of such defects is heterogeneous. This supposition is in good agreement with the data of infrared spectroscopy that local environment of carbonate ions in striation bands differ cardinally compared with those of regular matrix.
