Essay

The thesis concerns substantiation of loess mass stability parameters involving their genesis, and energy and hydrodynamic characteristics of earth slopes on the basis of mechanism of changes in deformational and strength properties of loess in the context of various load-carrying capacities and behavior of filtration processes. Substantiated experimental technique has been applied for the first determination of phenomenon of loess filtration anisotropy inversion compared with its nature. It has been proved that processes of depth erosion result from it. Simulation of pre- and after earth flow filtration processes of loess masses within a territory of residential district "Topolia" has made it possible to obtain quantitative characteristics of changes in hydrodynamic behaviour of ground waters under the effect of technogenic factors; potentially dangerous zones of earth flows within the mass have been identified. A technique to evaluate strength using consideration of energy and hydrodynamic characteristics has been substantiated; it has also been adapted to solve problems of loess rock stability within industrially disturbed mass. Parameters of loess mass potential activation as well as its qualitative range have been substantiated for the first time making it possible to forecast various phases of earth flow processes. Recommendations concerning engineer protection of built-up areas have been elaborated.
