Essay

Objects of the study are spruce forests of the north-eastern megaslope of the Ukrainian Carpathians. The purpose is to assess current state of the spruce forest stands of the studied region and to improve methods of their reproduction on forestry and selection basis. Taxation and forestry, silvicultural, selection, as well as mathematical and statistical methods were used in the study. Scientific novelty. Reproductive ability of ramets on a 25-year-old clonal seed plantation of the European spruce were studied for the first time; the level of use of PFSB of spruce and selection seed provision of needs of the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Forestry and Hunting Administration was determined; the feasibility of use of improved seeds, which has better germination and its planting material has higher biometric indicators and percentage of standard seedlings was proved; the feasibility of increasing age of the spruce seedlings grown in nurseries of the alpine zone to three years at the optimum density of 60 plants per meter and efficiency of processing of spruce seeds by systemic action drug "Rostock", accompanied by a significant increase in height of seedlings, was determined; the optimal composition of substrate for growing spruce seedlings with closed root system, containing 30% peat + 20 % limestone + 50% humus was determined; effective methods and technologies of artificial reproduction spruce forest stands were proposed. Practical importance. The ways of preserving the gene pool of the European spruce, improvement of its selection, seed production, processes of growing planting material, as well as effective methods and technologies of artificial reproduction of spruce forest stands were proposed. They are used in the preparation of "Recommendations on the restoration and cultivation of spruce forests of the Carpathians", implemented by the Lviv, Chernivtsi and Ivano-Frankivsk RFHA since 2011. Some statements of the dissertation are used in the educational process in teaching subjects "Forest selection" and "Forest cultures" for students specializing in "Forestry and Horticulture" in the Prykarpathian National University named after V. Stefanyk.
