Essay

The dissertation is the first complex research of kolomyikas' poetics within Ukrainian folklore studies. There is depictured the genre peculiarity of these regional Ukrainian folklore short songs. It is outlined the territory of their distribution (Boyko, Gutsul, Nadsiannia, Lemko, Opillia, and West Podillia regions). As kolomyikas are one of the most dynamic genre in Ukrainian folklore we were to adjust a thematical classification adding groups about struggling of our people for independent state, current life of Ukrainians, ecological problems etc. It is established their specificity in the context of Ukrainian and neighboring Slavic peoples' folklore. Also it is discovered typological proximity of the studied songs with Lemkos' spivankas. We prove polyfunctionality's, geographical, social and historical factors' impact on the semantic content and local variety of kolomyikas. The main focus is made on the specifics of artistic and stylistic means of these songs. We draw attention to the fact that kolomyikas are based on spoken language. The expressivity of their text can be created by context, stylistically marked words, newly invented lexics, borrowings from other languages affixes, auxillary words, sounds, etc. The structure of kolomyikas is very traditional (4+4+6)2. In the Transcarpathian and Ivano-Frankivsk region we have fixed three-lined variants. The more to the West (Yavoriv region) the structure is mixed with Lemko's spivankas. Rhymes are of a women type and as a rule in the end of the lines. But also are possible in the middle of the verses. Among the tropes we found dominance of assessive epithets, comparisons, metaphors and hyperbolas that are not peculiar for lyrical songs and differ kolomyikas from them and other genres. Analyzed system of symbols showed the genetic unity with all Ukrainian folklore.
