Essay

The thesis is devoted to complex research of everyday life of urban centres in England during the 11th-13th centuries. Based on written, visual and archaeological sources, it deals with material life (household, food, clothing), time-spatial structures, work and leisure relations, communication, and key features of public (municipal corporation system and authority) and private (marriage, family, individuality) life. In English cities during the 11th-13th centuries, the system of material life reflected the general features of mentality of the Middle Ages. The main factors that affected the world of things were natural (climate, natural resources, geographical features, etc.) and social (traditions, norms of religious environment, royal and administrative impact, etc.). English townsmen focused on advanced of medieval aristocracy, which was a major customer of products and encouraged improvement and development of production through legislation. The influence of clergy leaded to the development of science and culture, the foundations of morality. During the High Middle Ages Englishmen in the cities not lived in full stench or dirt. Cities dwellers in everyday life concerned on the environment, house sanitation, hygiene. The interior, household utensils, buildings, clothing indicated a desire for comfort and expression of individuality.
