Essay

The object of the research: life and activity of M.A. Domontovych. The purpose of the research: a comprehensive reconstruction of the military-administrative and scientific activity of the general M.A. Domontovych in the context of the sociopolitical and cultural development of the Russian empire of the second half of the XIX century. The methods: analysis, synthesis, classification, deduction, induction; structural-functional, historical-genetic, historical-comparative, biographical. Scientific novelty: the research project covers life and activities of the general of the Russian army M. A. Domontovych (1830 – 1902); based on critical analysis of the historical resources, achievements of historiography and the newest methodological approaches, it describes circumstances of the personality formation and the military career start, the administration service of the general in Bulgaria, studies pilot work of the officer of the General Staff, the chairmanship in the Military-historical committee on the description of the Russian-Turkish War 1877 – 1878, the achievements of the military historian; it characterizes the essentials of education and education in Poltava military school, preparations for getting commissioned rank in a Noble regiment. It studies a system of life values and private life circumstances of a regular army officer in St. Petersburg; it states that entering the Academy of the General staff and successful finishing the studying defined the further career of M. A. Domontovych. The work proves that the main stream of an army officer's service was the military- pedagogic field, where he occupied positions of a teacher of military history and tactics, a field-officer of the Academy of the General staff and an inspector of the classes of Nikolaev cavalry academy; the work studies the role of the general-major M. A. Domontovych in the setting up the administrative civil authorities in liberated Bulgary within the circumstances of the Russian-Turkish war 1877 – 1878; this work comprehends a complex organization policy realized by the director of the secretariat of the imperial Russian political officer in Bulgary M. A. Domontovych, for functioning of the mechanism of the central department in the region; it is explained that the M. A. Domontovych's chairmanship in the Military-historical committee of the Russian army headquarters (1886 – 1899) had guaranteed gathering and systematization of a massive amount of valuable fact-based information for description of the events and consequences of the Russian-Turkish war 1877 – 1878 on the Balkan Peninsula; professionality of M. A. Domontovych as a researcher showed up in a series of his contributions. Practical value of research: the materials of the research can be used for the further theoretical development of the problems of social and military history of Ukraine and the Russian Empire of the specified period, during the preparation of general works, monographic studies, teaching aids, lecture courses on the new history of Ukraine, special courses in military-political history, biography for higher education institutions. Sphere of use: higher educational institutions.
