Essay

The objective of the thesis lies in understanding of the objective and subjective factors of development of Kosovo self-determination process from the moment of appearance of this idea till its implementation within the modern international relations system. The object of the scientific analysis is the Balkans within the conditions of the former Yugoslavia’s break up, and interstate conflicts in this region, particularly on self-identification and international determination of Kosovo. The subject of the study touches upon the reaction of international community on the fact of Kosovo self-determination, and foreign and domestic factors of this process, transformation of the main international organizations’ policy on the conflict in Kosovo and its positioning in Europe. The practical value of the gained results comprises the possibility of their usage within the educational process when studying modern history of the Balkans, Europe, the history of the UN and OSCE peacekeeping activity; findings can also be used in the books on the history of international relations in the late 20th and the early 21st cent., as well as for the development of special courses on international organizations’ peacekeeping activity, and on the history of the EU policy on the Balkans, modern history of Serbia and Kosovo. The methodological base of the thesis is based on the general principles of historicism, objectivity, dialectic approaches to the problems of scientific study, and also on the complex of the methods of historic research, including problematic-chronological, historical-comparative, structural-functional methods. The combination of concrete historical analysis and problematic-summarizing approach was used.
