Essay

The thesis is devoted to a theoretical study of the influence of an external magnetic field on the field emission from metals and taking into account relativistic effects that can occur when high voltages are applied, as well as analysis and interpretation of new experimental data obtained during the study of the influence of a magnetic field on high-vacuum breakdown. A relativistic generalization of the Fowler-Nordheim theory describing the phenomenon of field emission from a metal, which leads to an increasing in the transmission coefficient was made in the thesis. A generalization of the Fowler-Nordheim equation, enabling us to consider the effect of an external magnetic field parallel to the metal surface on the transmission coefficient was made. An expression for the transmission coefficient was found when the condition E>cB is satisfied. The decrease in breakdown voltage, which was observed in the experiments of the IAP NAS of Ukraine and CERN, where a weak magnetic field decreases the breakdown resistance, has been explained.
