In the dissertation research the peculiarities of interpretation in the leading central Russian journals of the beginning of the XX century are considered. The sources of materials on the basis of which articles for magazines were written were identified and characterized. It was found that this issue was not sufficiently considered in historiography. The approaches of the editorial office and journalists to the coverage of the socio-economic development of this region are analyzed. The influence of political events in Russia on the subject of articles is described. Attention is paid to the activities of magazine correspondents. A comparison of approaches to the interpretation of information between different areas of journals. The commonalities and differences in their assessments of events are highlighted. As a result, it was found that there was a great interest of the Russian public in the analysis of domestic events in Central and Southeastern Europe. Liberal and left-wing magazines examined in detail the labor movement, the social status of the population, the economy, and the activities of political parties.
