Essay

The paper presents the results of the author on improving the radioactive waste generation control and forecast of operating NPPs of Ukraine in three areas. In the direction of "Establishing the radiation equivalence of WWER-440 reactors spent fuel and HLW obtained from its processing" were: for vitrified HLW from WWER-440 SNF reprocessing by the "PO "MAYAK" technology basing on estimates the radionuclide composition at different holding times, for the first time substantiated the list of radionuclides significant for equivalence determining, determined the criterion of equivalence, developed the algorithm of vitrified HLW batch formation for return to Ukraine; selected simple analytical functions that satisfactorily describe the activity of radionuclides in the spent fuel of WWER-440 reactors, for different values of initial enrichment and combustion. In the direction “Forecast of radioactive waste from power units with WWER type reactors decommissioning” were: for the first time estimated the amount and disposal cost of radwaste from WWER-440 and WWER-1000 reactors decommissioning which became the basis for decommissioning radwaste management planning; developed the algorithm for optimizing the schedules of power units decommissioning within the sites of Ukrainian NPPs. In the direction of “Planning and control of operational radwaste generation of existing NPPs” were: improved the control of NPP operating radwaste management, including by international financial organizations, and planning of radwaste management activities at individual NPPs and at Energoatoms; improved algorithm for establishing control levels of radwaste generation at NPPs. The obtained results were practically used in the branch, contributed to the improvement of the control and forecast system in the field of radwaste management of operating NPPs of Ukraine, which effective operation of ensures safe and efficient management of radwaste, that is a necessary condition for safe operation of Ukrainian NPPs. Key words: radioactive waste, radioactive waste management, control levels of radioactive waste generation, radionuclide composition of vitrified high-level waste, spent nuclear fuel, radiation equivalence criterion, radioactive waste from decommissioning, optimization of decommissioning scenarios.
