Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the complex study of the polis of Delos in the IV – first half of the III centuries BC. It is based on a wide range of ancient written, archaeological, epigraphic, and numismatic sources. Many problems are revised such as the establishment of Delos as the ancient Greek religious center and the center of the Delian-attic amphictyony, the First Nesiotic League and the Second Nesiotic and the status of Delos in these unions of islanders, evolution of the polis of Delos in the IV – first half of the III century BC; definition of features of the economic development etc. It is proved that Delos became the center of the cult of Apollo during the «dark ages» after the coming of Ionian tribes. It also became a center of early Ionian amphyctyony. The problem of the existence of an oracle on the island was considered and it was found that the oracle could function and give certain prophecies, but it was not as well known as the Delphic one. The influence of different states such as Naxos, Paros, Samos, and Athens was considered. During the Greco-Persian Wars, the island of Apollo was chosen as the center of the Delian League. The creation of the Delian-attic amphyctyony with Delian supremacy after transferring the treasure of the Delian League from Delos to Athens was studied. The significance of the foundation of the festival of Delia was determined. With getting independence Delos became a religious center of the First Nesiotic League and hold its status as a holy place. It is investigated that Delos was constantly under the patronage of the Antigonides, Ptolemies, and other Hellenistic monarchs. The Second Nesiotic League formed under the protectorate of Rhodes is considered. It was proved that Delos was important as a commercial center for this union.
