Essay

The thesis is devoted to comprehensive analysis of viability of herbaceous perennials of the Chornohora Mts. This characteristic is related to replenishment, distribution and evolution of populations. For the first time the long-lasting monitoring has been conducted for 500 populations from 70 habitats from the forest, subalpine and alpine zones in natural and human-changed conditions. Theoretical and practical aspects of the analysis of viability of populations, methods for inventory and evaluation of parameters have been elaborated. The problem of population boundaries and mechanisms of conservation of viability of different spatial-functional types of populations has been highlighted. Conclusions about spontaneous restoration of populations after anthropogenous disturbances have been made. Practical actions for restoration of viability of degraded populations of rare, relict and officinal plants of the Carpathians have been proposed.
