Essay

Dissertation deals with methodology of complex ecological assessment of river and lake basins of the plain part of Ukraine (using rivers Udaj, Vorskla, Desna, Goryn', Kohylnyk, Sarata, lakes situated between rivers West Bug and Prypyat' as an example). New trend of hydroecological investigations, including: a) integral complex ecological assessment of basin status: spatial and temporal transformation of streams and flood lands, anthropogen transformation of catching area and ecological water quality; b) hydroecological mapping; c) estimation of limiting effect factors and trends for restoration and sanitation of environment were worked out in the dissertation. The main factors, effecting on the ecological situation in the river and lake basins were determined as follows: level of anthropogen and technogen transformation of catching area, streams and flood lands; mass of foreign additions to the water; buffer capacity formed by the primary organic matter, produced by riparian and aquatic biocenoses; self-purification ability of aquatic environment. Consequently, strategy of environmental management have to be developed according to the reglamentation of anthropogen and technogen load on the water body and providing of high level of bioproductivity of natural and artificial biocenoses. Methods of sanitation of aquatic environment were proposed. Strategy of rehabilitation of damaged river and lake macroecosystems are based on the complex assessment of ecological status in the basin and realization of economically grounded compensative solutions - technical, biological, spatial. The main results of this work were inculcated while projecting of systems of municipal sewage biological purification; sewage of sugar-processing plants; cattle-breeding farms and for high school educational courses for ecology students.
