Essay

On the base of prospective study (1990-2001) of persons, who had been diagnosed with Acute Radiation Sickness (ARS), two cross-sectional studies (1990-1995 and 1996-2001) of the samples of patients with mental disorders appeared following the work on cleaning-up of consequences of the Chernobyl accident (liquidators) together with parallel comparison groups and internal control the neurophysiological mechanisms of mental disorders at exposure to ionising radiation as a result of the Chernobyl accident were revealed, comprehensive characterisation and systematisation of these disorders were presented, unified diagnostics of mental disorders and the model for optimisation of psychopharmacological and rehabilitation measures were elaborated. A possibility of deterministic neuropsychiatric effects at doses more than 0,3 Sv and an expediency of establishment of the new interdisciplinary field of medical sciences - radiation neuropsychiatry were grounded. It was shown a possibility of differentiation of neurofunctional radiation and non-radiation disorders and the radiation dose reconstructions on the base of quantitative electroencephalography data.
