Essay

The dissertation brings a complex study of Ukrainian historical-heroic tales; it had been performed with the aim of full and multifold display so in contents as well as in formal expression of the genre. In Ukrainian folklore studies this thesis is the first scientific work throwing light upon the history of Ukraine from the people's point of view since the most ancient times till the early XX c. The research work is concerned with Prince's times with the struggle of Ukrainians against Mongol-Tartar invaders, as well as Cossack-Hetman epoch, Haydamaks' and Opysheks movements. The dissertation brings solution of some important theoretical problems connected with poetics of genre. Essential attention is paid to the functional nature of genre.
