Essay

The X-ray photoelectron, emission and absorption spectroscopy methods were used to study the electronic structure and character of the chemical bonding of several types of nonstoichiometric compounds based on transition metals, namely: 1) usual interstitial phases containing vacancies either on a non-metal or metal sublattice; 2) interstitial phases in which one type of atoms is substituted by another type of atoms; 3) hydrides and hydrogen bronzes; 4) coordination compounds (Magneli phases containing crystallographic shear planes); 5) diselenides; in these compounds nonsoichiometry can be achieved either by intercalation of metal atoms between the Se-М-Se layers or due to absence of metal atoms in the layers.
