Essay

This dissertation examines the history of Ukrainian folklore studies during the second half of the 19th century, focusing specifically on the activities of classical schools of thought dealing with the mythological, cultural/ historical and psychological realms. It is the first work in Ukraine to analyse fully the development of Ukrainian folklore studies in classical schools of thought within the Slavic and European context, to examine the methodology of these schools and to interpret a variety of theories passed down by such outstanding figures as N. Kostomarov, P. Kulish, A. Potebnja, A. Kotljarevsky, M. Dragomanov, M. Sumtsov, I. Franko etc.
