Object of research - medieval history of Western Europe, Byzantium and foreign slavic peoples in V – middle of XVII century, specificity of individual consciousness and social -historical idea in Middle Ages and European scientific literature of XIX century. The aim of research is the all-round complex analysis of history of study of medieval epoch in higher educational institutions and scientific-historical societies of the Ukrainian grounds of the Russian empire at an early stage of development of medievistics (1804 - first half of 1880), which problems were investigated in epoch of maximum development a historical idea in view of a urgency of civilization problems. Research methods - analysis, synthesis, system-structural, retrospective, historical-comparative, method of the critical analysis of the literature, method of periodization, historical-descriptive, historical-genetic, historical-typological, problem-chronological. Scientific novelty: the complex historical analysis of an early stage of development of medievistics in Ukraine is carried out; it periodization is created; the scientific heritage all of its representatives is investigated; the high degree of conformity of conclusions of medievists to the real contents medieval narrative is established; is proved, that civilization approaches of Ukraine medievists were sustained basically in antiwestern spirit. The practical value of the dissertation: the results and conclusions of research can be used in the further scientific development of problems of a medieval history of the countries of Western, Central, Southeast Europe, by preparation of generalizing scientific works and manuals on medievistics, slavistics, study of Byzantium, study of sources, study of local lore, history of educational institutions and scientific-pedagogical activity of the separate representatives of a historical science.
