Essay

This habilitation thesis is devoted to investigations of the influence of external electric and magnetic fields, negative curvature of space, and nonzero fermion density on dynamical symmetry breaking in elementary particle physics and condensed matter systems with the Dirac-like energy spectrum. It is shown that the low energy dynamics of neutral states in relativistic quantum field theories in a constant magnetic field is described by effective noncommutative quantum field theories. A new phase with condensates of vector gluons is proposed as the ground state of superconducting two-flavor quark matter.
