Essay

The manuscript addresses the photocatalytic processes with the participation of semiconductor nanoparticles and nanostructures manifesting quantum size effects. Reduction in the size of semiconductor crystaks to a few nm was found to accelerate the photocatalytic processes, to expand the circle of the photocatalytic systems and reaction substrates, as well as to render the photoactivity to semiconductors passive in the microcryctalline state. Special features of the photocatalytic behavior of semiconductor nanoparticles were illustrated on the examples of the reduction of metals, methylviologen, water, and sulfur, oxidation of sodium sulfide and sulfite, and photopolymerization of acrylic monomers with the participartion of metal oxide and chalcogenide nanoparticles.
