Essay

Theoretical and methodological foundations have been developed for the application of forest melioration on principles of sustainable development to create favorable ecological conditions for cultivated lands and to provide effective protection to the soil covering against destruction and to facilities of the economic infrastructure by forming a scientifically proven spatial geometry of modern agro-landscapes. With this object in view, an investigation was made into unfavorable natural and anthropogenic impacts upon agro-landscapes at the regional and global levels. An assessment was performed of the levels of ecological depression in Ukraine's regions, based on density indices for noxious emissions to the atmosphere. Research was carried out on the historical background, on the infancy of forest melioration and on its land-reclamation development in connection with substantial transformations of agro-landscapes. Use was made of ecological principles of optimization to protective forest stands of various purposes on the basis of zonal and regional approaches with regard to the status of technogenic impacts upon prevailing types of soils in agro-landscapes. Substantiation is given to the required minimum percentage of protective forests in agro-landscapes to ensure their sustainable development with the use of adaptive-landscape methods of research as well as to the ways of improving the balanced application of land-reclamation to contemporary agro-landscapes.
