Essay

Object: German-speaking academic environment of the late XIX to the early XXI century, especially that its segment that has been associated with Eastern European studies. Objective: full exploring the peculiarities of the processes of constructing images of Eastern Europe by scholars, especially historians, German-speaking world and their relationship with the eastern policy of Germany, Austria and Switzerland from the late XIX to the early XXI century. Methods: historical comparison, discourse analysis, methods of oral history, imagology. Results: for the first time image of Eastern Europe, which constructed and functioned in the German-speaking academic environment from the late XIX to the early XXI century, is analyzed, a new conceptual approach for research of topic by comparing the characteristics of the processes of institutionalization of Eastern European studies in Austrian, German and Swiss academic environments is proposed, involving large number of little-known in Ukraine sources, including archival, part of which was first introduced in the scientific turn, the important role occupied Ukrainian theme in all of the above issues and subjects is revealed. Scope of application: significantly expands the knowledge about interpretation of Eastern Europe in the German-speaking academic environment and helps to clarify the perception of Ukraine German-speaking world; for further scientific development of the image of Eastern Europe, particularly Ukraine by German-speaking world and the broader and more comprehensive study of the Eastern policy of German-speaking countries; in the development of training courses on historical politics, history of Ukraine, world history and the history of international relations, the historiography in higher education institutions; in the development of foreign policy strategies that are based on historical politics.
