Shparyk Y. Actual conditions, forestry and ecological bases of sustainable forest management in the Ukrainian Carpathians

The object of study: forest ecosystems in the region of the Ukrainian Carpathians and measures for forest management in them. The objective of study: to develop a system of sustainable management of the Ukrainian Carpathians forests on the monitoring results of the main forest formations. The methods of investigation: systematic, logistics, forecasting, silvicultural, forest inventory, mapping, mathematical and statistical. Scientific novelty: it is for the first time: increasing of the forest area in the Ukrainian Carpathians region in recent years was established thanks to overgrowing of farmlands; the change of the most common species in the region forests from Norway spruce to Common beech was revealed; minor damages of the regional forests were identified and their natural dynamics; the priorities, objectives, criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management were substantiated and formulated, as well as landscape-catchment approaches and the goals and objectives of sustainable forest management for each forest categories; a system of measures for forest complexes was developed on a basic of the structural and functional features of major regional tree species. Practical significance. The results of research have been implemented in activities of the Ukrainian State Forest Inventory Project Enterprise, State enterprise "Nadvirna LG" Galitskyj and Carpathian National Nature Park..
