Essay

A new calculation method, called modified crystal field theory (MCFT), to find electronic levels of transition and rare-earth ions placed in coordination complexes with different chemical nature and symmetry has been proposed. It is based on the traditional crystal-field theory and a new parameterization which uses the effective nuclear charge of a paramagnetic ion. The method of spin-state diagram calculations has been proposed. This method and possibility to vary coordination-complex parameters allows to study spin-state fluctuations in a paramagnetic ion. MCFT gives possibility to take into account the interaction of paramagnetic ions with an external magnetic field. Due to this option it was possible to interpret successfully EPR spectra.
