The object of study - the processes in nonlinear surge arresters in the presence of a part of the current-voltage harmonics. The aim of the study is to define the basic principles of choice and non-linear operation of surge arresters under the influence of the higher harmonics of the voltage at the point of installation, as the main way to protect power supply systems. Research methods: the fundamental tenets of the theory of electrical circuits, the general theory of heat engineering, high voltage equipment, the theory of probability and mathematical statistics. Theoretical and practical results: The scientific positions and methodical bases of choice surge arresters for the power supply systems of different nominal voltage, which allows the design stage surge protection to take into account the impact of higher harmonics in the place of connection of the arrester. A method of approximation in the area of the arrester leakage current CVC,. The possibility of using infrared controls as key for the diagnosis of acute renal failure in the operation. Novelty: set up an integrated approach to accounting for the influence of the higher harmonics in the selection and operation of non-linear surge arresters , which allows on the stage of production and design to take into account the presence of harmonic oscillations of the voltage at the installation site and ensure the reliability of the power supply system in which the unit is installed. Degree of implementation: The results of the thesis are used in the development of the following technical regulations of Ukraine: Rules for Electrical, SOU-N ERI 40.1-00100227-67 2012 Surge arresters nonlinear voltage 6-35 kV. Guide for selection and use in distribution devices. Surge voltage protection. Instructions. Normative document approved by the Ministry of Justice. The results of the thesis used the following institutions: "Ukrenergo" in the development of requirements for the selection of surge arresters, AC "Kharkivoblenergo" when choosing the type of ARF. Scientific and practical results of the thesis are used in the educational process of the department "Electric power transmission" of the National Technical University "Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute" (Mr .. Kharkov) during lectures and practical classes for students of specialties 8.05070102 - "Electric systems and networks" 8.05070101 - "Power stations Application: The results can be used in enterprises of all industries of Ukraine in new construction and reconstruction of power supply or surge protection with arresters. The use of the results will allow to take into account the presence of harmonics in the composition of the voltage at the stage of selection type of protective device in the design of protection systems. The results can be used in teaching the art of high voltage and overvoltage for students of electrotechnical specialties.
