Essay

The methods are developed for investigation of wave processes in layered media of different physical nature with volume and surface nonlinearities, including metamaterials, gyrotropic and plasma media, the system "lithosphere-atmosphere-ionosphere". Based on the developed methods, the characteristics of wave processes in the media mentined above are investigated and modeled. Higher-order nonlinear effects (dispersion, diffraction, and forced Raman self-scattering) are accounted for. The conditions of the spatial amplification of the electromagnetic waves with the simultaneous "negative phase behaviour" in the linear metamaterials with active metaparicles are found, first. The new wave effects are found and explained. The ways of the control/management of the wave processes in layered nonlinear, active, gyrotropic media are proposed. Such a control is based on the application of non-stationary and inhomogeneous external fields
