The thesis is dedicated to the solution of the problem dealing with the improving of wheel steel quality for the railway transport. In this paper theoretical and experimental investigations of the proc-esses of de oxidation and rifining of carbon wheel steel have been fulfilled. It allowed for the first time under workshop conditions to carry out combined research into melting of wheel steel in high ca-pacitu arc furnaces followed by the uses of various methods of out-of-furnace treatment. A study is made of thermodynamics in the processes of interaction of nitrogen dissolved in wheel steel with nitridegener-ated elements and on the dasis of it there was developed an effective technology of carbonitriding strengthening. As a result of complex laboratory investigations and industrial testing it was found out the expertiency of the usage of special electrometallurgical methods in the production of wheels for important function. The technological pa-rameters of the melting wheel steel in open hearth furna ces with com-bined out-of-furnace treatment going immediately after, were investi-gated and optimized. The main results of the work have found practical application in the melting of wheel steel.
