Essay

Theatre and literature historian V. Peretz (1870–1935) takes pride of place in the history of Ukrainian academic theatre studies and the development of its methods. In recent decades V. Peretz’s diverse scientific activity has increasingly become the subject of research of philologists and culturologists, but there is still no comprehensive analysis of V. Peretz’s work in the field of theatre studies. The scientific novelty of the obtained results is that for the first time in Ukrainian theatrе studies: 1. The typology of the main directions of theatre studies of the first third of the 20th century is suggested; 2. The facts of the scientific biography of V. Peretz, the theatre historian, are revealed and systematized; 3. The scientific and organizational, methodological and ethical principles of V. Peretz are identified, systematized and specified; 4. Common and distinctive features of methodology, and hence the research work of theatre historians, who were involved in the scientific communication with V. Peretz, are determined; 5. The methods of studying texts on theatre studies are suggested; on their basis, the comparative analysis of theatre studies concept and research methodology of V. Peretz and his contemporaries is carried out; 6. By comparing the scientific, organizational and methodological principles of Ukrainian and foreign theatre historians, the features that characterize different types of theatre historians are identified. 7. The place and significance of the scientific and organizational achievements of V. Peretz in the field of theatre studies of the first third of the 20th century are specified.
