Essay

A retrospective analysis of the essence of the concepts of «innovation» and «innovation activity» was conducted. As a result of systematization of scientific views on the definition of innovation, four main approaches that prevail in modern research have been identified – innovation as change, process, result and tool. The classification of innovations is generalized, which allows to specify the directions of the innovation process, to analyze the management of innovation activity, as well as to assess its effectiveness, identify ways of diffusion of innovations, to form and implement an innovation strategy.
