Essay

The study investigates the Sabatynivka group of sites of the Cucuteni-Trypillia cultural complex. The settlements belong to the Cucuteni A-Trypillia B1 stage and are located in the Middle Bug area. Some sites are known in the publications (Sabatynivka I and Berezivska HES) and some settlements have been discovered and explored relatively recently. The source base of the thesis consists of materials from the scientific archives and funds of the OAM and the IA of the NAS of Ukraine. Characteristic features for Sabatynivka-type settlements were examined. This may indicate the taxonomic status and the variability of settlements even within the Middle Bug area. Contacts of the population of settlements of the Sabatynivka group with the population of steppe Chalcolithic cultures in diachronic perspective are traced: there is evidence of military contacts (ditches around settlements, collections of bifacial tips of metal weapons) and «peaceful» interaction (exchange). The process of changing the tradition of Pre-Cucuteni to the Cucuteni can be traced on the ceramic materials from the settlements. Complications over the community structure can be traced on the existing exchange network of copper products and jadeite axes.
