Essay

Research on the topic of the dissertation was performed during 2017 – 2021, in accordance with the plans of research work of the Department of Archival Studies and Special Branches of Historical Science, Faculty of History, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. The aim of the study was to establish the general patterns of formation and historical development of urban heraldry of the Southern Ukraine. The existence of city self-government, as one of the forms of public power, is accompanied by the use of own symbols, which represent the public power of the city to its citizens and embody the internal unity of the community to external actors. The Southern Ukraine, as a historical and geographical region of Ukraine, has a long tradition of urban selfgovernment, which can be partly traced back to antiquity.
