Essay

Object of study: Ukrainian military bands as a phenomenon of musical culture. Research methods: theoretical, historical and chronological, analysis and synthesis (inductive and deductive), content analysis, classification and typology, observation, descriptive (narrative), qualitative (quantitative), comparative (comparative), biographical, interviews, systematisation. The scientific novelty of the results obtained is determined by the purpose of the dissertation, the set of research tasks, the subject and object of the study. For the first time, the dissertation provides a comprehensive source analysis of scientific and journalistic literature on the formation and development of military bands in the context of the history of Ukrainian musical culture; a narrative description of the evolution of military bands in the discourse of history; Ukrainian military orchestras are understood as a system that involves the interaction of educational, compositional, and performing components; these formations are considered as a team, united not only by the desire for professional excellence and a common artistic idea, but also by mental and emotional feelings of mutual understanding, support, and educational universality; updated assessments and modernised functional concepts of military band performance in the context of state-building in modern Ukraine; highlighted new artistic achievements of the military band service of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Based on the guiding and official documents of the Ministry of Defence, the typology of military bands and their repertoire was formed and systematised. The concept of a ‘Ukrainian military orchestra’ has been enriched with new meanings, which is positioned as a team of highly qualified musicians, a team of individuals who are characterised by the performance of many functions and are part of a particular army unit. Such a collective is marked by a special professional versatility, as it meets administrative, ceremonial and socio-cultural needs. The personal contribution of the author of the dissertation is to solve an important scientific task in the cultural field - to create a description of the main activities of military brass bands in the space of socio-cultural transformation processes during the period of Ukraine's independence.
