Essay

The present thesis contains the complex analysis of distribution, number, breeding biology, bihaviour and economic significance of Grebes under conditions of the west of Ukraine and their comparative characteristics on natural and artificial reservoirs. There is presented the Atlases of breeding and wintering distribution, and the total estimation of Grebes number in the study region. The migration phenology and dynamics, peculiarity of habitat preference, main reproductive parameters and their variability, colonial structure, feeding behaviour and time budget are also considered. The most important role of fishponds is proved in supporting Grebes populations in the Western Ukraine under present conditions.
