Essay

The dissertation deals with the study of address as verbal means of directed speech. The peculiarities of lexical address viewed in its regular and occasional aspects are defined. The author establishes basic functions of address: nominative, that of communication monitoring and emotive. The adequacy/inadequacy of addressee's nomination, the speakers' work at their image as well as the ways language and speech means function while manifesting the speaker's emotive and evaluative attitude towards the addressee are studied. The changes in the address form paradigm are described with regard to the ambivalent and dynamic nature of the phenomenon under analysis. Besides, address is analysed as a means of establishing/breaking communicative contact and continuation of communication. New tendencies in the functioning of appellative pronouns as a means of speech addressee-orientation expression in Modern German are examined along with the nominal forms of address.
