Essay

A review of the activities of Ukrainian regional archival commissions that operated on the territory of the contemporary Ukraine from the late 19th to the early 20th centuries is provided. Special attention is given to the historiography and bibliography of the topic. The history of the archival commissions is reviewed both on institutional and individual levels. The organizational structure, as well as the typical and specific areas of the activities of the individual commissions are described, on the basis of the extensive study of primary sources. The roles of the archival commissions are defined as associations for historical research, the development of local historical studies, and the preservation of historical artifacts.
