Essay

The thesis is devoted to the problem of embodying the religious and philosophical problems into the novels by G.Greene, I.Waugh, Murdoch, Golding, Spark, Fowles of 1950-70s. It investigates the semantic and genre-poetological peculiarity of the novel with the religious and philosophical problems as an artistic phenomenon of postmodernism and "new realism" in the modern English literature. The modern artists regard the reality as a complex, unsteady, controversial thing, which may be understood in different ways and includes "spiritual reality" as well. The latter is the ground of the novel with the religious and philosophical problems. The thesis determines the specific character of the hero, the conflict and the subject, the constants of content and form, which unite the works of different authors into the distinguished genre group; it considers various image-bearing semantic layers in the novel with the religious and philosophical problems. The results of the investigation can be used in the lecture c ourse of the history of the XXth century English literature, in preparing special courses and seminars.
